What Is Qirát?

Qirāʼah (قِرَاءَة) literally means recitation or reading, with its plural form being Qiraʼat (قِرَاءٰت). It is a branch of Quranic sciences that deals with the different modes of recitation of the Quran.
Qāri (قَارِئ) means reciter or reader, with plural forms such as qāriʾūna (قَارِئُونَ), qurrā (قُرَّاء), or qaraʾah (قَرَأَة). A Qāri recites the Quran following the proper rules and methods of recitation with a melodious tone, regardless of whether they have memorized it.
Qirát in Light of Hadith

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (R.A) narrated that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him) said:
“Jibreel (A.S.) recited the Quran to me in one hand. I recited it back to him. Then I requested him to increase the number of hard, and he recited it again, increasing it to seven ahruf, and then he stopped.” (124 A.H.)

“once Jibreel came and said to the prophet (peace be upon Him) Allah Subhanahu Watlla has ordered you to read the Qurán to your people in one harf. The Prophet replied: I ask Allah’s forgiveness and pardon! It will be difficult for people to read in one harf, Jibreel goes back and cam again. Now he said you can allow them to read in two ahruf. Then prophet (peace be upon Him) answered again: I ask Allah’s forgiveness and pardon! My ummah is still not able to read in two ahruf only. This happens again and forth time jibreel says: ‘Allah has allowed your ummah to read in 7 ahruf and whatever way they read, it will not consider wrong at all’”
Why Learning Qirát Is Important?
- Preservation of the Quran
Learning Qirát helps preserve the original ways the Quran was revealed and recited by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him). It ensures that the Quran is passed down authentically, just as the Prophet and his companions taught it.
- Understanding the Quran’s Beauty and Depth
Each Qirát highlights the Quran’s linguistic richness. It allows learners to appreciate the diverse styles of recitation, deepening their connection with the words of Allah and enhancing their understanding of their meanings.
- Fulfillment of Sunnah

Learning Qirát refines recitation skills by focusing on precise pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm. This helps in reading the Quran with the correct rules of Tajweed, ensuring clarity and correctness.
- Strengthening Worship
Reciting the Quran beautifully and accurately during Salah and personal worship brings peace and fulfillment. It also enhances the spiritual experience for the reciter and those who listen.
- Facilitating Da’wah and Teaching
For those who wish to teach the Quran or share its message, knowing Qirát helps them recite accurately and answer questions about the variations in recitation. This is especially important for Quran teachers and scholars.
- A Rewarding Act of Worship
The Quran is the word of Allah, and learning its recitation through Qirát is an act of worship that earns immense rewards.
The Prophet (peace be upon Him) said,
“The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” (Bukhari)
The Categories of Qirát

Qirat refers to different ways of reciting the Holy Quran; each passed down by famous scholars. Each Qirat is named after the scholar who taught it and had a trustworthy chain of narrators.
Every style of Qirat has its own rules for pronunciation (called Tajweed), which can slightly change how words or letters are pronounced.
There are two main types of Qirat:
1. Mashhur
Mashhur refers to recitations with a wider but still reliable chain of narrators. Though they are highly trustworthy and error-free, they are not as widely spread as Mutawatir.
2. Mutawatir
Mutawatir means the recitation has been passed down through many independent chains of trustworthy narrators, making it error-free. The famous Quran scholar Abu Bakr ibn Mujahid (d. 324 A.H.) chose these recitations.
The Types Of The Mutawatir Qirat
The Mutawatir Qirat refers to the seven main styles of reading the Qur’an passed down through many trustworthy narrators. All scholars consider these styles to be wholly accurate and agree upon them. Here are the seven types of Mutawatir Qirat:
Qirat Naafi’ Al-Madani (Madinah-169/785)
Qaloon and Warsh are the two main famous Qurra (reciters) who preserved this recitation manner of the Holy Quran.
Imam Malik (RA) and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (RA) mostly recited the Holy Quran in this manner.
Qirat Ibn Khatir Al Makki: (Makkah-120/737)
Al-Buzzi and Qunbul are the two main famous Qurra who preserved this recitation manner of the Holy Quran.
Imam Shafi (RA) recited the Quran in this way.
Qirat Abu Amr Ibn Al Ala al-Basri (Basra-154/762)
Qirat Ibn Aamir ash-Shami (Syria-154/762)
Qirat Asim Al-Kufi (Kufa-127/744)
Hafs and Shuba are the two main popular Qurra who preserved this recitation manner of the Holy Quran.
Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (RA) often recited the Quran in this manner.
Qirat Hamzah al-Kufi (Kufa-156/772)
Khallad and Khalaf are the two main famous Qurra who preserved this recitation manner of the Holy Quran.
Khalaf who also has his own Qirat, i.e., Qirat Khalaf al-Bazzar.
Qirat Al-Kisaa’i (Kufa-189/904)
Understanding Qira’at: Simple Explanation

A master teaches and recites each Qira’at, including all its variations. Students learn it directly from the master and continue the tradition.
The differences between Qira’at are minor. They include variations in:
- How long are sounds stretched (prolongation)?
- The tone and style of recitation (intonation).
- The pronunciation of certain letters and words.
The various dialects of Arab tribes influenced these differences. There may also be variations in:
- Pauses and stops.
- Vowels (harakat) and consonants.
- Pronouns, verb forms, and even whole words (less often).
To make it easy to understand, think of British and American English. They share the same language but differ in spelling, pronunciation, and accents. Similarly, Qira’at has slight differences while still being the same Quran.
